In the first picture he's Antinous; in the last one he's Pete Doherty. Fun! So Elvis wanted to be not black, but Jewish? I totally want to construct some dazzling pseudo-intellectual thesis out of that, but it's not coming to me. When I write the blog, I'll let you know!

"Elvis the Lover is also however the archetype of the post-war male ‘Pervert’. Radiantly narcissistic and dramatically unable to negotiate his Oedipus Complex, he is the prime idolatrous icon of a decadent, post-patriarchal age."

Pseuds Corner anyone?

I happen to be a helpless fan of Elvis' music, early, mid and late, but rather than write about that, which there's rather a lot of, the essay is an analysis of Elvis as a visual phenomenon - as an icon.

I'm sure - and hope - I project onto him feverishly, but perhaps rather less than those that write about the songs he sang but didn't write himself.

Like many celebrities, Elvis is a cypher and folks tend to see in him (project on to him) what they want to see. The ususual physical looks (very heavy lidded eyes, huge glossy hair, and oddly shaped mouth) helped to make him larger than life and perfect for the TV and movie screens. As you say Mark, Elvis' unique looks make him stand out among others. It is interesting to me though that you dont really mention Elvis' music in your essay.
